What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese touch therapy for relaxation and pain relief that also promotes healing. Although Reiki is "hands-on", unlike massage, Reiki is administered through a very gentle touch. While the patient is seated or lying down and fully clothed, the practitioner’s hand are placed along energy pathways on the head, neck, shoulders, upper chest, abdomen, legs, and feet (similar to those used in acupuncture).

It is a healing approach that uses light touch from the practitioner to channel healing energy to the recipient. Traditionally it has been used as a very gentle yet effective way to relieve physical and emotional pain and to promote spiritual clarity. Reiki also speeds the healing process and balances the body's energy. Reiki works on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels by restoring the lost balance between the mind, body and spirit.

What is the History of Reiki?

Reiki is believed to have begun in Tibet several thousand years ago. Seers in the Orient studied energies and developed a system of sounds and symbols for universal healing energies. Various healing systems, which crossed many different cultures, emerged from this single root system. Unfortunately, the original source itself was forgotten.

Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Christian educator in Kyoto, Japan, rediscovered the root system in the mid-to late 1800s. He began an extensive 21-year study of the healing phenomena of history's greatest spiritual leaders. He also studied ancient sutras (Buddhist teachings written in Sanskrit). He discovered ancient sounds and symbols that are linked directly to the human body and nervous system, which activate the universal life energy for healing.

Mikao Usui then underwent a metaphysical experience and became empowered to use these sounds and symbols to heal. He called this form of healing Reiki and taught it throughout Japan until his death around 1893. The tradition was passed through several grandmasters of reiki such as Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, Hawayo Takata, and Phyllis Lei Furumoto.

The Effects of Reiki Energy Therapy

The Reiki energy therapy will bring individual in harmony with himself/herself, with the whole universe and with a higher power. Reiki has a prophylactic effect and allows healing of illness. Reiki will also help in removing the pain (an anaesthetic effect), and this effect will generally appear after a couple of minutes after we start a Reiki treatment.

Reiki not only promotes your physical wellbeing but also has a positive effect on your emotional and spiritual equilibrium. This is why, after a treatment, many people feel refreshed, relaxed, cleared and more content in them. It is suitable for healthy and sick people of all ages. You can use it to replenish your vital energy, to strengthen your immune system and to help with healing of ailments and serious illnesses such as sports injuries, cuts, burns, internal diseases, emotional disorders, and stress-related illnesses.

How is a Reiki Session Performed?

Reiki is a therapy that the practitioner delivers through the hands, with intent to raise the amount of Chi in and around the client, heal energetic pathways and reduce negative energies. Reiki can be practiced in several ways: on its own, along with other alternative therapies, and along with conventional medical treatments.

When a practitioner performs Reiki, usually the client sits or lies comfortably, fully clothed. The practitioner places her hands on or slightly above the client's body, using 12 to 15 different hand positions. Each hand position is held until the practitioner feels that the flow of energy has slowed or stopped, typically about 5 to 10 minutes.

How Long is a Reiki Session?

A session lasts 30 to 90 minutes each.

What Will I Experience During a Treatment?

The experience differs from person to person and possibly also between different sessions; it depends on the body’s ability to receive this treatment and its benefits.

The energy flows wherever it is required (spiritually guided) and can normally be felt as a warm sensation or tingling in the body. Receiving Reiki is a very relaxing and soothing experience!

Usually when receiving Reiki you will feel very relaxed and you may have a "floating" feeling. You may feel heat, tingling or cold under the practitioners’ hands. These and other feelings come from what the Reiki energy is actually doing in and around your body i.e. adding energy, removing excess energy, balancing, removing blockages.

It is also possible that you experience different emotions or thoughts you had forgotten might pop up. If they do you are probably supposed to revisit this thought or emotion, learn something and release them. Some people receive insights on how to solve problems.

Remember that all healing starts with a process of releasing, which means your condition could potentially worsen and then once you overcome this crisis of healing, which could be in the form of emotions or even toxins in your body that you need to get rid of, healing comes about even though you might initially even feel worse than before. You can help your body by drinking lots of water.

How Many Sessions Do I Need?

This question reminds me of how many pills am I going to take before I notice a difference! Every individual is unique and so is their capacity to heal. Some people only require one or two sessions while others need quite a few before they notice anything. If you are just interested in seeing what Reiki can do for you, then just take two sessions.  I recommend two sessions due to the repeated described difference in experience between the first and the second treatment in terms of relaxation and comfort.

If you have a chronic problem you want to work on, then make a plan with Dr. Lisa. Generally 1 – 2 sessions are performed each week depending on the chronicity of the problem.
